    Now the naysayers and those who have something to lose will come out in full force. I have already heard them.
    The main objection to the automated cars, is that no matter how many cars you buy, they will not handle the rush hour load. Telecommuting will allow for a significant decrease in rush hour traffic, both by allowing for satellite offices located close to where people live and for a large move to flexible hours. This will mostly alleviate the problem.

    Now here is the exciting part. Let's take a look at the revenue side. If the average fare per person is four dollars and there are on average 4 passengers per hour. That is 16 dollars times 24 hours times 365 days times 35,000 vehicles. That comes to 3.68 billion per year. A more conservative way to calculate revenue is 1.4 million trips per day times 4 dollars times 365 days, which comes to 2 billion. I suspect revenue will be somewhere between the two.
    Now let's say half of the 2 billion has to go to maintenance, supervisory and technical personnel, software costs and the purchase of new stock. The cleaning of each vehicle could be contracted out to home owners, who would be responsible for the upkeep. One central repair shop would exist and in most case the vehicles could drive themselves there. Energy is inconsequential especially if these cars are electric. Even if they are hybrids by that time they will be using natural gas. It would cost the city less then 20 dollars per day per car.

    chump change. Add the money the city will save by not having to subsidize the transit system and you can see how this is a financial godsend to the city.
    Now there will be some winners and losers. Let's deal with the losers.
    The construction industry.

    Seniors
    It is imperative to emphasize the importance of the automated car system in the lives of seniors. By 2030, it is estimated that 20 percent of the population will be seniors. The baby boomers, born between 1946 and 1962 will be between 68 and 84 in 2030. An expectation that people over 70 will, especially in the dead of winter or in the heat of summer, just walk to the bus stop, take the bus to a streetcar and the streetcar to the subway as opposed to using their cars, is unrealistic at best and dangerous at worst. For these people to give up their cars it is vital that they have a door to door transportation system. The automated car system will be even better and cheaper for these individuals then owning a car. The door to door system takes away the need to find and walk from parking spots. This mobility gives seniors what they want and so richly deserve: Independence and dignity.

    Now the naysayers and those who have something to lose will come out in full force. I have already heard them.

    One can object for many reasons. Financial considerations ( is there a more effective place to spend the money, like health care?) are at the top of the list. My objections are different.
    Even though this article was spurred by the fight in Toronto, the ideas apply to almost any major metropolis in the world.

    I will describe changes that will make these options obsolete.
    First, patterns of car use are changing. It has been recently reported in the Globe and Mail that fuel consumption in the US is down by 17%. Why? Well, young people are not traveling us much, and their lives are becoming much more tied up with the Internet and video games than with cars. Young people are not driving like they used to. As I will explain below this trend should not only continue but accelerate.

    City Hall for cutting the cost of government while at the same time increasing services.
    City Hall which has more money to spend.
    The Environment Car industry which produces the vehicles. The transit fleets will need to be replaced every three years or so. Many people will still have their own cars, but they will replace their old cars with cars which are fully automated. Ten years from now we could see a golden age for car manufacturers.
    Less pollution and no smog days.
    Less gas consumption.
    Less congestioncongestion.
    Meet global warming targets.
    Car industry which produces the vehicles. The transit fleets will need to be replaced every three years or so. Many people will still have their own cars, but they will replace their old cars with cars which are fully automated. Ten years from now we could see a golden age for car manufacturers.
    Fewer accidents and much safer streets and fewer injuries and deaths cutting health costs.
    Freedom of movement for the disabled.
